Dhoti Kurta gets the Makeover that was Long Due

We have all seen someone in our family or a friend of our grandparents probably wearing this traditional Indian dress and being super comfortable in it. And then we saw it took a sabbatical from the fashion circuit until it resurfaced in a very trendy and modern avatar recently and became everyone’s favourite soon. We are talking about the very homely attire of Dhoti kurta that Indian men are sporting at every occasion these days, right from a Diwali get together dinner to the mundan ceremony of their kids. Fashion designers did away with the conventional method of tying the five-yard long dhoti by making it pre-stitched while keeping the essence of the garment intact. We have for you some of the versions of this Dhoti Kurta that are a must have every man’s closet now.

· Go the South Indian Style

Down the southern part of India, dhoti is not paired up with a kurta but with an angavastram which is a sort of shawl. We know you wouldn’t want to be dressed like that in the northern part on India unless it is a south Indian wedding that you are attending. In that case, too you can skip the angavastram and drape the dhoti in a lungi style while matching a plain shirt with it. You can put the angavastram or a shawl over your shoulder to get a more traditional look. Another winner would be to pair a white dhoti with a white cotton kurta.

· The Pathani kurta and dhoti combo

A short Pathani kurta can be worn with something which is called a dhoti salwaar. Looking every bit the modern version of the conventional dhoti, this one is stitched like a salwaar and you simply need to wear it like one. There are no hassles of tying the dhoti and no worries about it coming loose. Choose the dhoti salwaar in a light color tone like beige or white with soft colored Mens kurtas in turquoise blue, pale pink, peach, and coral. If you plan to wear the combination to an evening affair, you can match colors like grey with black or maroon with mustard.

· Dhoti Kurta with an open jacket

Intricate embroidery work open jacket in pastels paired with a similar color tone short kurta and dhoti is the perfect attire for a day ceremony at an Indian wedding. Looking for something more somber and suited for the evening? You can go in for a velvet jacket with mirror work on the collar and a black pre-stitched dhoti.

· Bandgala jacket with loose dhoti salwaar

We saw Fawad Khan own the look in his last Bollywood flick with a Bandgala coat cum jacket and a dhoti salwaar. You can add a dupatta to your ensemble to take the style quotient high.

· Sherwani with Dhoti

If you are comfortable wearing it, you can wear a traditional dhoti with a brocade sherwani and create just the perfect retro meets traditional look.

· Silk dhoti kurta combo

For all your festive occasion needs you can go in for a silk kurta in bright colors like yellow and wear it atop a gold border lined dhoti, either the draping one or a pre-stitched one.

· Do it Gujarat style

Rock the party with the traditional men’s jacket or kurta called kediyu with a dhoti. This jacket is generally embellished with mirror work and is tied at the sides. The work is called kutch work and you can even wear it as an open jacket over a short kurta and dhoti pants.
