Sherwani is a long coat-like upper garment generally worn by men of the Indian subcontinent. The Back Story of Sherwani
Sherwani for men has evolved originally from Persian cape. It was given European style and given button down the front. In India, it came to fashion scenario in the 19th century as a European style court dress of Mughal Emperor and other royal courts of Northern India. Gradually it became a royal attire of different regions of India and gained popularity in aristocratic people. It became popular in ordinary people like traditional and occasional wear. It resembles an attire of present-day Azerbaijan called shirvan; the name sherwani might be derived from this word. This garment also resembles a garment of Caucasia, so this may have been derived from this garment too.



Form of Indian sherwani
In India, sherwanis is favourite formal winter dress of Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Hyderabad. Hindus mostly like Achkan sherwani whereas Muslims favor simple sherwani for men. The distinction between these two types is that Achkan sherwanis is longer than simple sherwanis whereas sherwanis are flared at the hip.

Grooms generally wear designer sherwanis studded with various accessories like zari, gotta,chumki, etc. Shervanis are made of different fabrics like cotton, silk, velvet, semi velvet, etc. For wedding purpose silk or velvet, shervanis are mostly considered. Cotton shervanis can opt for other occasions.
Length of the dress is also essential. It should generally stretched below the knee but one should consider his height and choose the garment of the right length. The sleeves also should be of perfect length. It should fit the wearer perfectly. Sherwani is gaining popularity worldwide due to its uniqueness in design and use of vibrant color and also due to its royal look. Grooms look like a Raja in a heavily embellished sherwani. Shervani has become a favorite garment. It has enriched Indian Men Clothing.
